I received the very sad news today that Tony Smith, a club stalwart of many years, has passed away after a long battle with illness.
Tony served this club for many years along with a period also playing for Woodchester but his heart was always really with Minch.
He was an extremely good all rounder: always very fit and with a tremendous eye for the ball, I recall in his last game at Minch when he celebrated (finally!) his retirement from the game he hit a stylish 35 after not picking up a bat for months. (Paul Auster got a ton batting at the other end).
Always a gent, Tony knew how the game should be played but was highly competitive.
He was a great supporter of the youngsters and never shy to throw a 16 year old in to open the batting on a Saturday. (Ask Alex).
I will put together a longer memory when I have spoken to a few of his peers but at this sad time our thoughts are with his family and many friends.
